Profile

Kyle Phillips burst onto the international golfing stage with the 2000 opening of Kingbarns near St Andrews in Scotland, his career starting many years earlier in the offices of Robert Trent Jones Jr. While with RTJ II Phillips was responsible for some really nice work on the European mainland, particularly courses like Penha Longa and Seddiner See (South Course) which were both elevated beyond the typical standards achieved by the RTJ II firm thanks to Phillips’s work.

Kingbarns was the big break and it was Kyle Phillips who was responsible for shaping the gently sloping farmland into a heaving dunescape and creating an authentic links experience as memorable as any modern course in Scotland. He went on to also build the ambitious Dundonald links course on the West Coast of Scotland as well as popular courses like The Grove near London and the new Verdura resort in Sicily. Eichenheim in the mountains of Austria is another solid layout, the design work notable considering some of the restrictions imposed upon Philips.

Largely thanks to the success of Kingsbarns, Kyle Phillips has become a man in demand with new course projects completed in South Korea (South Cape), Morocco (Tazegzout), Abu Dhabi (Yas Links) and Sweden (PGA Links of Sweden) as well as across his native America. Particularly impressive was his redesign of the wonderful California Club of San Francisco, which was bold and radical on the one hand but absolutely necessary on the other. The redesign helped return this great layout to its rightful place among the elite of California's classic golf courses.
