Australian born, Walter Travis was introduced to golf when he emigrated to the USA in his 20s. He picked up the game quickly and not only enjoyed success as a player, winning the US Amateur Championship three times and the British Amateur once, but as an accomplished course designer. His work at Ekwanok and Garden City, for example, remain popular nearly 100 years after completion.
