The annual Asian Golf Monthly Awards were handed out earlier this month at a Gala Dinner in Pattaya, Thailand during the 2011 Asian Pacific Golf Summit. With special guest Jimmy Connors looking on, awards were handed out in 28 categories, including for Best Championship Course, Best Maintained Course, Best Renovation, Best Value for Money, Best Course on the Subcontinent and Asian Golf Personality of the Year.

While the awarding of CTS Tycoon in Shenzhen with the Best Renovation of the year award pretty much destroys any credibility these rankings may have, there was an interesting result in the Best New Course in Asia category.

Despite strong competition from the likes of Stone Forest (2nd) and The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula (3rd), it was the Dunes Course at the Danang Golf Club in Vietnam that took top honours. Danang was the final course Harley Kruse designed whilst working for Greg Norman Golf Course Design. Commenting on the accolade Kruse said that he was, ‘very proud of what was achieved in the creation of this course.’ He paid tribute to the developer, Vina Capital, saying they were, ‘totally committed to the very natural dunes concept we set out to achieve. The result at Danang is a golf course that might be more at home amongst the layouts on Melbourne’s Sandbelt, but is indeed a true expression of the sites local landscape and subtle beauty.’

Kruse added that, ‘we had a gun team of shapers and construction people from Linksshape on site headed by one of my good mates Pete Waddell. Pete’s shaping work can also be seen on the Norman Course at Mission Hills.’ In terms of the layout Kruse says, ‘The routing was worked very carefully with the natural dunes land such that we had almost 16 completely natural golf holes with only the rendering of fine shaping works needed to create the final results.’

Since leaving Greg Norman Golf Course Design last year, Harley Kruse has partnered with former colleague Bob Harrison to create a new design company for Asia called Harrison + Kruse. Harrison is also an industry veteran in Asia, and best known in the region for his award winning design work at Nirwana Bali in Indonesia.
