According to a news release from Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy, the redevelopment of the Lonsdale Golf Club is set to proceed after approval was given to rezone the existing site. The club has pursued the redevelopment for more than 10 years, and has been working with Ogilvy Clayton Golf Design on extending the golf course, maintenance facility and water storage facility into an adjoining rural property. Permission to subdivide part of the existing golf course site to create a residential subdivision was given after detailed discussions with the community and state planners. The designers at Ogilvy Clayton have spoken highly of the potential for the new Lonsdale course, and hope to begin work on the redesign in the near future.

Minister for Planning Matthew Guy has approved a planning scheme amendment that will allow for the expansion and redevelopment of the Lonsdale Golf Course at Point Lonsdale.

“This rezoning is a major economic boost for Point Lonsdale; we’re set to deliver a residential development, a dedicated conservation reserve and a redeveloped golf course,” Mr Guy said.

“The rezoning of the land will allow for approximately 100 new residential lots, giving financial stability to the golf club and significant investment into the local building industry.”

As part of the rezoning, the golf club will relocate four holes further away from environmentally sensitive areas and establish a conservation reserve. The reserve will be adjacent to the course on Lake Victoria which is part of the Lonsdale Lakes State Nature Reserve.

“The new reserve will help protect environmentally sensitive habitat for threatened and migratory birds including the orange-bellied parrot, and is within three kilometres of the Swan Bay Ramsar site which is listed as a Wetland of International Importance,” Mr Guy said.

The new conservation reserve will be managed by the golf club.

Member for Western Victoria MLC, David Koch supports the rezoning and redevelopment of the Lonsdale Golf Course.

“This is a great outcome for our local community providing new jobs and growth. It has taken two years of dealing with complex environmental and planning matters, providing an outstanding result,” Mr Koch said.

The Minister for Planning established an independent inquiry to consider the Lonsdale Golf Course Redevelopment project and assess an Environment Effects Statement prepared for the project.

“The amendment involves rezoning part of the existing golf course between existing residential areas to the north and south. It will allow for the development of approximately 100 residential lots, subject to a future permit application, as well as 8,000 square metres of public open space,” Mr Guy said.

The amendment follows significant support from the Bellarine Peninsula community with over 80 per cent of submissions, received by an independent inquiry, supporting the redevelopment.
