Ria Bintan

Laguna Bintan

Indonesia, Bintan
4.3 (4)
Course Opened: 1997

Designed by Jim Wilcher whilst working for Greg Norman Golf Course Design, the Laguna Bintan course enjoys some of the finest beach-side views in the region but is arguably the poorest of the layouts on Bintan Island with major shortcomings in terms of shaping, design and general construction. Shortly after opening each of the bunkers here washed away due to a heavy downpour, the traps have since been rebuilt but are still a problem because many are either badly sited or badly built. The shaping of fairways and greens is also ordinary.

In terms of the routing, the holes that touch the ocean or get near the Bintan coastline make more sense than other parts of the course, but design flaws unfortunately prevent these areas from reaching any great heights. A par three on the front nine, played partly over a beach, and one on the back nine that follows the sea, should have been stunners but in each instance the shaping of the green and surrounds is rather uninspiring. It's a shame because the views here are pleasant enough and the competition on Bintan Island isn't very strong.
