PLANET GOLF REVIEW:

Two hours north of Sydney, the unfortunately named Pacific Dunes Golf Club was designed by local architect James Wilcher and opened for play in 2005, well after Tom Doak’s world famous namesake in Oregon was created.

The Australian Pacific Dunes is far less impressive than the ‘real’ version at Bandon, with a nice enough woodland setting coupled with a handful of moderately interesting holes and superior turf conditions failing to elevate this beyond standard modern residential golf fare. The use of a wetland on the back nine and a few areas of elevation late in the round are the highlights of a course that is mostly flat and lacking in both strategic and artistic merit.

The nearby Nelson Bay/Port Stephens area is a nice destination, and makes this golf course worth visiting for those holidaying with their clubs and eager for a game. It’s unlikely that many players will travel far for golf alone, which is a shame and was surely the aim when the project was conceived.
